ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST

EMH&T has an opportunity for an experienced environmental scientist/ecologist/biologist to join our multi-faceted and dynamic team of environmental professionals and civil engineers located in Columbus, OH.

The Environmental Scientist will work under the mentorship of Senior Environmental Scientists and will contribute to our environmental projects and play a pivotal role in our continued success. You will work as part of a team to creatively solve problems, working on some of the largest civil design projects in the state. As part of our dynamic team of environmental professionals and civil engineers, you will support the delivery of quality products and exceptional client service to both private and public sector clients, combining environmental solutions with civil engineering principles.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate, communicate, and adhere to company and division processes, procedures, standards and the promotion of company culture and core values.
  • Assist with ensuring that civil engineering projects comply with environmental regulations and standards set by local, state, and federal authorities.
  • Manage assigned deliverables and coordinate with other departments and team leaders.
  • Interact with clients, regulatory agency personnel, and with other EMH&T team members.
  • Assist with developing scope and fee proposals and maintain project files.
  • Leverage your knowledge and experience with wetland/stream delineations, ecological surveys, and environmental regulations to ensure that infrastructure projects are environmentally responsible and legally compliant.
  • Coordinate and perform fieldwork, including wetland delineations, habitat assessments, wetland/stream monitoring, and ecological field assessments.
  • Facilitate and author technical reports, waterway permit applications, and other environmental compliance documents.
  • Provide detailed technical reviews of documents and reports prepared by colleagues, ensuring accuracy, regulatory compliance, and adherence to project standards.
  • Our Environmental team works both in the field and in the office and conducts some out-of-town/overnight travel primarily in Ohio and adjacent states.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Botany, Geology or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience preferred.
Skills
  • Experience with ecological surveys, wetland delineations, aquatic and terrestrial habitat assessments, vegetative and biotic sampling. Relevant experience in Ohio is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state environmental laws and expertise in regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated experience with preparing delineation reports, ecological survey reports, and waterway permit applications.
  • A self-starter that demonstrates dependability and consistent work efforts.
  • Ability to work independently, and enjoy working in a team environment and mentoring other team members.
  • Strong planning and organization capabilities, critical thinking skills, and high attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to express ideas clearly.
Preferred Skills
  • Demonstrated project management and client management experience.
  • Experience with or certifications for freshwater mussel surveys.
Physical Requirements
  • The work may be physically demanding and aspects of the work environment described here are representative of those that an employee in the above-listed position(s) will encounter and must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical demands may include:
  • The ability to tolerate outdoor weather conditions and be exposed to outdoor insects, poisonous plants, and allergens for extended periods of time (8-10 hours per day throughout the year).
  • The ability to walk for extended periods of time and the ability to maneuver over rough terrain, ditches, steep banks, and uneven ground.
  • Must be able to carry up to 25 lbs. of equipment/materials while walking across terrain.
  • Intermittent squatting, leaning, twisting and bending.
  • Use of hand equipment or tools.
Work Environment
  • Our Environmental Scientists spend time both in the field and in the office. The amount of time in the field varies seasonally, but fieldwork will be conducted year-round.
  • Capable of handling the physical requirements of the role, including working in occasionally demanding field conditions.
Travel
  • Some out-of-town travel will be required, primarily in Ohio and surrounding states. Some assignments may require full weeks of out-of-town work.
