Midland Trace Trail East Leg
EMH&T worked with Synthesis, Inc and the City of Westfield on the 2 mile multi-use Midland Trace Trail project. This “rails to trails” path connects downtown Westfield to the former Monon railroad right of way and provides alternative transportation and recreational opportunities for the residents of Westfield. EMH&T prepared a route survey and topographic survey and then developed plan and profile design along the length of the trail. The profile grade was established to minimize cut and fill, and to preserve existing trees and landscape where possible. HEC-RAS modeling was utilized to determine the bridge requirements necessary to cross Cool Creek. This modeling confirmed that the City of Westfield could use an existing bridge. A culvert was designed to carry the trail across the Kirkendall Regulated Drain. Bioswales were designed at various locations along the trail to provide water quality treatment for the increased stormwater runoff from the proposed trail. EMH&T developed pavement markings and signalization at significant street crossings. Erosion control measures were designed to minimize sediment runoff during construction.
