Civic Center Drive Urban Street Lighting
The RiverSouth urban redevelopment in downtown Columbus included the reconstruction of Civic Center Drive along the Scioto River. Along with roadway design, EMH&T engineers designed the street lighting and an underground festival power system along the corridor. Street lighting in the urban environment is always challenging due to the dense nature of existing underground utilities to avoid, while also considering pedestrian routes and roadway geometry. Average intensity and uniformity is achieved while carefully siting each light pole. In this case, the light poles were also highly ornate fluted poles and bases complete with flower hooks and banner arms. Because this area of downtown Columbus is also home to a variety of urban festivals, EMH&T engineers designed several underground power stations for festival vendor access, which eliminates the need for extensive extension cords and power strips that are tripping hazards to festival attendees.
