HAM-75-13.71 3D Laser Surveying (ODOT District 8)
Hamilton County, OH
EMH&T was selected by ODOT District 8 to perform engineering services to design 3.5 miles of major interstate rehabilitation work on I-75 in Cincinnati, Ohio. In progress at the time was the elimination of one interchange, improvements to two other interchanges, and widening of mainline I-75 from six lanes to a maximum of 10 lanes. Design challenges on this project included improving highway geometrics and maintaining all current lanes of traffic with a complex maintenance of traffic scheme. Additionally, there were 13 highway structures, including two railroad bridges to be replaced. EMH&T took advantage of recent updates in survey technology – the Trimble® 3D laser scanner - to provide the survey services to support the preliminary engineering stage. By using this technology, EMH&T crews were out of harm’s way, avoided shutting down any lanes of traffic, posed little disruption to traffic, and were able to complete the work at night when traffic volumes were reduced. Our crews gathered significantly more data in a compressed timeframe, which resulted in an accurate 3D image of the bridges that was used by our subconsultant to perform reconstruction design of the structures..
