Minerva Park Lake Dam Reconstruction

Columbus, OH

When a new single-family housing development was proposed within the Minerva Park community, the nearby Minerva Lake earthen dam became a focus of attention due to both its age and method of construction. The dam had previously been determined to be out of compliance with State of Ohio dam safety regulations. EMH&T provided professional engineering services to develop a plan for bringing the dam into compliance with mandatory spillway capacity requirements while also maintaining its current Class III hazard rating. EMH&T provided a comprehensive hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of the dam and designed removal of woody vegetation from within 15 feet of the dam embankment, removal of an existing concrete spillway and pedestrian bridge, and the design of a new principal spillway system which includes a cast-in-place concrete intake tower with trash rack and two 72” diameter outlet pipes to convey flow from the tower to the adjacent creek downstream of the dam. These improvements were deemed both cost efficient and also effective at addressing the structural and regulatory deficiencies of the dam, allowing the lake to remain an amenity within the Minerva Park community. The engineering analysis and design of improvements to the dam is being performed under a dam safety permit administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
