Highland Creek Drainage Improvements
The city of Indianapolis had previously constructed a stream bypass from Highland Creek to Germania Creek to protect downstream residents from frequent flooding. This original project included multiple points where long term maintenance would be needed; however, appropriate access to these areas was not installed as part of that project. Also, additional downstream flooding on Germania Creek was realized, even though the designed detention/wetland system appeared to be working as planned. EMH&T designed permeable roads constructed of grass over geoblock for access to these previously designed access points to be used for maintenance vehicle access and also designed upgrades to the drainage ditch downstream of the detention/wetland system to alleviate flooding during non-river flooding events. EMH&T is working closely with the city’s maintenance and operations group to properly locate these access roads and review their design so that city equipment can easily access the necessary locations.
