Denison University Recreation & Athletic Center Expansion
EMH&T provided civil and environmental engineering, surveying and landscape architecture to Denison University and Hastings & Chivetta Architects for the $40 million renovation of Denison’s Mitchell Recreation and Athletic Center. Improvements to the existing 81,000 sq. ft. facility included the addition of a natatorium and a Hall of Fame for students and alumni. Site work consisted of the demolition and reconstruction of an existing parking lot, creation of two new parking lots, storm and sanitary sewer upgrades, and the relocation of North Road. Our ability to provide civil and landscape architectural services under one roof enabled an integrated building and site design. EMH&T’s collaboration and communication with the entire project team fostered creative solutions for every challenge, including the 60-foot elevation differential that spanned the property. EMH&T designed an intricate, innovative retaining wall to allow for a functional parking lot on a 60-foot high hillside. Our team’s sustainable stormwater methods and sanitary sewer upgrades laid fundamental groundwork for the project’s LEED Silver certification. The stormwater quality system is the first on Denison’s campus and is being used as a large scale planning model for use on future projects. EMH&T’s in-house environmental group facilitated a quick approval for winter clearing in a large mature wooded site.
