Native mussels are protected in Ohio by law, and mussel survey protocols were released in 2013 in a joint effort by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. EMH&T provides the resources needed to perform such mussel surveys for public and private projects throughout Ohio. Our in-house staff is certified by the State of Ohio to perform mussel reconnaissance assessments, full mussel surveys and mussel relocations.
East Fork Buck Creek, Clark County
EMH&T, working as a subconsultant to HDR, Inc., completed a mussel reconnaissance, mussel survey and relocation for the Indiana & Ohio Railway MP 7.93 Bridge Rehabilitation Project. The project was located on East Fork Buck Creek, an unlisted stream with a watershed greater than 10 square miles in Clark County, Ohio. Following confirmation of the presence of mussels via the reconnaissance effort, EMH&T conducted the mussel survey and relocation using SCUBA equipment. The survey effort was completed in an accelerated timeframe to accommodate the construction schedule. Approval and clearance of the survey report was obtained from the ODNR within three weeks of notice to proceed from the client.
